The Best Time to Visit Scotland for a Women's Group Trip

If you're planning a Scotland trip with a group of women — especially one that involves castles, whisky tastings, live music, and a few unplanned pub nights — the season you pick changes the whole experience. Here's how we think about it, and why we landed on May for the Chasing Skirts trip.

Late spring (May)

Our pick. Daylight runs past nine at night, so a day can hold a castle, a long lunch, and a pub session without anyone rushing. May is statistically one of Scotland's drier stretches, the lambs are in every field, the gardens are showing off, and you beat both the midges and the summer crowds and prices. Pack layers, because Scotland will still give you four seasons in an afternoon. That is part of the charm.

Summer (June–August)

The famously long days are real — you'll get light until 10pm in the Highlands. But you'll share every castle, distillery, and Royal Mile photo op with the peak tourist crowd, prices spike, and good lodging books up six to twelve months out. Edinburgh in August (Fringe) is its own beast: incredible, chaotic, expensive.

Fall (September–October)

A close second. The summer crowds thin out, the heather is still purple into early September, and the Highlands turn gold and russet by October — which is exactly the moody, cinematic Scotland most people picture. Pubs feel cozy again, distilleries are calmer (better tastings, more conversation), and you can actually breathe at the popular castles. Weather is cooler and wetter than summer but very manageable with a good jacket.

Winter (November–March)

Atmospheric and cheap, but short daylight (sunset around 3:30pm in December) means less sightseeing time. Some rural accommodations and Highland attractions close for the season. Beautiful if you're after quiet, whisky bars, and Edinburgh at Christmas — limiting for a first-time, sightseeing-heavy group trip.
